Mayor of Newham claims half the landlords there evade tax

Last month a couple of unsubstantiated statistics were published in the papers.  They both came from the Labour mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, who has an axe to grind.  He is fighting the government over the continuance of the mandatory universal licensing scheme that was introduced in 2013 and will end in December.

The paradox of Section24

Last week a reader pointed out that the gross yield figures that are bandied about are misleading and we should concentrate on the return on investment (ROI).

Guardian’s current onslaught against private landlords

It’s getting very hard to keep up with the Guardian’s current onslaught against private landlords; it’s also supremely ironic that they should be engaging in this one-sided tirade whilst simultaneously stating that the paper provides: ‘quality, independent journalism, which discovers and tells readers the truth.’

I would beg to differ.

Who hijacked the JRF project “Poverty, evictions and forced moves”?

Four people from the Cambridge Centre for Housing and Planning Research (CCHPR) wrote the report, and a summary, for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF).  That is to say, four of its members are credited with writing it.  But it looks as though Generation Rent has had a hand in it as well.

What Makes Car Rental Businesses So Different?

If the general public borrow money to buy a car they don’t get tax relief on the finance costs. However, car rental businesses do, regardless of whether they are operated as a sole trader, a partnership or a company.
